“Over a year ago, I decided that it was time to give back and offer my time and energy to Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity. Prior to that, I have devoted myself to my professional life as a dentist, and my personal time to my children. After achieving certain goals in my practice, I was able to open regular time in my schedule for volunteering at a charitable organization. I had been exposed to Habitat by joining my son, Jeremy while he was a student at The Park School. After experiencing the vibrancy and well organized community at Habitat, I knew that it was the kind of organization that I wanted to get involved in. After being part of the building crew for over a year, I greatly appreciate the progress that I experience every week. This includes the construction site as well as my carpentry skills. I could not imagine a more direct result than my experiences in this type of charitable venue. In addition, the warm and dedicated staff is precisely what keeps me looking forward to my weekly participation. The pleasure of volunteering is only matched by the rewarding experiences of the home dedications. The opportunity of observing the sheer joy of the families receiving their keys is quite moving. One important life lesson that this experience has given me is how rewarding volunteering can be. The camaraderie among the community of volunteers of a wide range of ages and backgrounds has been the most unexpected benefit. In addition, it has provided a balance to my life that no luxury, vacation, or extravagance could match.” - Alan Scharf, regular construction volunteer. Alan was awarded “Rookie of the Year for Construction” at our volunteer recognition luncheon in 2008. |
