United Churches
United Churches Steering Committee 2007
The United Churches Coalition is 12 years old, and has traditionally sponsored one house per year. Founded by Timonium United Methodist Church, other partners were enlisted as the cost to renovate a Chesapeake Habitat house increased beyond the one congregation’s ability. Now, United Churches offers congregations the opportunity to participate in sponsoring a Chesapeake Habitat house if they do not have the resources to sponsor an entire home themselves. Participants share the financial responsibility, and work together to physically build the house.
Full House Sponsorship costs $100,000. This is Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity’s cost to acquire a vacant property, purchase building materials, hire subcontractors, staff the project with skilled supervisors, and undertake necessary administrative support activities. In United Churches, each participating church contributes $5,000 or more towards this collective goal. Last year, we were able to expand the United Churches coalition so that we now have funded two houses per year, allowing us to house even more families in need. This year, we are involved in Chesapeake’s first ever new construction in Washington Village/Pigtown.
